Mapping Injustice in St. Louis & Milwaukee

Mapping Injustice is the research portion of the MLK Way design project and involved mapping social inequality for African Americans in the American cities of Milwaukee and St. Louis. These two cities, like many American cities are deeply segregated, by using mapping data from the Kerwan Institute, census data, and independent research data, the project documents the direct correlation between areas of haigh and low socio-economic opportunity and the race of the inhabitants. The project documents the devestating effects and realities of segregation in the contemporary American city. For example, in St. Louis, a black child living in the University City public school district will attend a school in one of the lowest ranked school districts (418th in the state) while their white neighbors only a block away will have the advantage of attending the high ranking Clayton school district (4th in the entire state). The research was used to diagnose the illness of the current state the American city and was then used as a tool for locating areas most in need of corrective measures, specifically affordable and mixed-income housing developed in the design portion of the MLK Way.
